Large Truck Accident Lawyer:

Nearly every driver has suffered anxiety and fear when driving alongside a large truck on the interstate late at night. These anxieties turn out to be well-founded in the research regarding large trucks conducted by the United States Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

For example, large trucks are involved in a disproportionately large number of fatal crashes. While large trucks make up approximately 3% of the registered vehicles in Florida, and accounted for eight percent (8%) of vehicle miles traveled, they were involved in 12.1% of Florida's traffic fatalities in 2004. In 2004, there were a total of 3,244 fatalities, of which 377 fatalities involved large trucks.

Further, a recent study by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) concluded that drivers of large trucks and other vehicles involved in truck crashes are ten times more likely to be the cause of the crash than external factors such as weather, road conditions, or vehicle performance* The Large Truck Crash Causation Study, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, March 23, 2006 Press Release.. In this study, action or inaction by the driver of either the truck or another vehicle involved was the primary cause of eighty-eight percent (88%) of these crashes.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration governs safety rules for trucks involved in interstate commerce. Many of these rules involve safety guidelines including drivers qualifications, hours of service, drivers logs, conspicuity/visibility guidelines for marking trucks, vehicle inspections and maintenance, drug and alcohol testing and many other regulations. Florida's Department of Transportation and other motor vehicle statutes incorporate many of these regulations for commercial trucks operating within the State of Florida.
