August 31, 2020 - Golf Cart Accidents

Two tragic recent golf cart accidents in the Villages once again highlight the safety hazards that can come with many Villagers’ favorite way to get around the community.

A 79-year-old man was killed in July when his golf cart collided with a sport utility vehicle, according to News 6. The man was reportedly traveling on Madero Drive at around 1 p.m in the afternoon when the accident occurred at the intersection with Zaragoza Place. He was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

Three days later, an 82-year-old golf cart driver was killed in a crash in the Village of Glenbrook. The man suffered an unidentified medical emergency while driving, which caused the single-vehicle crash, local law enforcement officers told Villages-News.

At least one of the men was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.

A rash of golf cart accidents across the state have forced local law enforcement officers throughout Florida to remind carters of the risk and encourage them to take basic safety steps.

“As you know, they’re not toys,” Sergeant Robert Siemer of the Sumter County Sheriff's Office said at a January community event in the Village of Winifred. He urged golf cart drivers and passengers to use seat belts and said some crashes can be avoided by maintaining appropriate speeds and complying with traffic laws.

There are a number of other basic safety precautions that can help protect everyone on the road. That includes staying seated and keeping your arms and legs inside the vehicles while it is moving, as well as using the horn liberally to make others aware of your presence in intersections and elsewhere.
