Contaminated Eye Drop Lawsuits

Eye drop solutions can become contaminated in various different ways with different potentially toxic substances. This can be especially dangerous for consumers because the drops are inserted directly into the sensitive membranes of the eye. If you have suffered harm as a result of contaminated eye drops, you may be entitled to compensation, and a personal injury lawyer from Babiarz Law Firm, PA, can help you determine whether you should pursue a claim.

Apotex

Apotex issued a recall of their brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution, 0.15% eye drops, in March of 2023 due to cracked bottle caps that present a risk of contamination. These drops are used to treat people with ocular hypertension and glaucoma. The recall applies to six lots that were sold between April 5, 2022, and February 22, 2023, including 5,10, and 15 milliliter bottles.

As part of the recall, Apotex advised consumers to contact their doctors for medical advice if they have used the recalled eye drops. If you used Apotex eye drops and suffered any adverse effects, you should also contact a personal injury lawyer to discuss your options.

Pharmedica

Pharmedica USA, LLC recalled their “Purely Soothing” brand eye drops at the same time as the Apotex recall. Unlike Apotex, the Pharmedica recall was due to contamination of the eye drop solutions that compromised their sterility. Pharmedica acknowledged that use of the contaminated eye drops could result in eye infections and even blindness. They advised consumers to stop using the product immediately and seek medical treatment if they have suffered any adverse effects. If you have suffered harm from using Purely Soothing eye drops, we recommend that you contact a personal injury lawyer to discuss your rights.

What if I Have Been Harmed By Other Eye Drops?

We have focused on two recent recalls for illustrative purposes only. The unfortunate reality is that there are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of dangerous consumer products on the market at any given time. Recalls can be powerful evidence of known issues, but many recalls are not issued until after consumers have been harmed. If you have suffered damage to your eyes as a result of using any brand of eye drops, you should contact a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible.

What Your Claim May Be Worth

If you have been harmed by contaminated eye drops, you may be able to file a lawsuit seeking monetary damages. You may be able to recover compensation for the following:

  • Your medical expenses incurred to treat the damage to your eyes
  • Any lost income you suffered due to being unable to work
  • Any pain and suffering you have experienced

Damage to your eyes, whether temporary or permanent, can result in very serious consequences. Protect your future by contacting a personal injury attorney for help.
