February 4, 2022 - Motorcycle Accidents

A Florida police officer was tragically killed in a recent off-duty motorcycle crash, once again highlighting the risk that comes with traveling on two wheels.

The 24-year-old woman, who worked for the Indian Harbor Beach Police Department, died after her motorcycle collided with a concrete barrier, Fox 35 reports. The accident happened overnight at Pineda Causeway and Patrick Dr. in Brevard County.

The officer was reportedly ejected from her bike in the accident. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, according to Click Orlando.

The officer was a Merritt Island native who graduated from the Eastern Florida State College police academy. She was an avid biker, a friend told Click Orlando.

“It was her way to sort of escape and unwind from the hardships of being an officer,” the friend said.

Florida sees more than 8,000 motorcycle crashes across the state each year, resulting in more than 500 deaths. Crashes can be caused by a wide variety of factors, from negligent drivers to poor weather conditions and motorcycle defects. Many of those were outside the control of the motorcycle rider involved in the collision.

Legal Rights After a Motorcycle Crash

Anyone who is injured in a motorcycle crash or other accident in Florida has the right to seek compensation from those responsible for the crash. An experienced motorcycle accident attorney can help you understand your rights and explore your options for obtaining money damages.

The compensation typically available in Florida motorcycle accident cases is designed to put the injured person back in the financial position that he or she was in prior to the crash. That includes money for medical bills, bike repairs, missed wages during recuperation, and any long-term impact of the injuries on the person’s ability to earn a living.

In the tragic situation in which a person dies in a motorcycle accident, his or her loved ones have the right to seek similar compensation by suing for wrongful death. Although no amount of money can allow you to go back in time and stop an accident from happening, it can ease some of the financial burden that often comes with losing a loved one.
