Two recent incidents are fresh reminders of the scourge of drunk golf cart driving that puts everyone in The Villages at risk.
A Villages homeowner recently lost his driver's license over a drunken golf cart crash, Villages-News reports. Days later, another local resident reportedly was handcuffed at the hospital where she was being treated for injuries in her own alcohol-infused collision.
The first driver pleaded no contest to charges stemming from a June crash near the intersection of Morse Boulevard and Deskin Lane in the Village of Osceola Hills. The man reportedly was ejected from his golf cart after striking a curb and slamming into a fence.
He was bloodied and bruised, but nevertheless tried to climb back into the vehicle and speed off. Fortunately, a witness, who later said the man was visibly intoxicated, grabbed the keys from the ignition first. Breath samples taken by police officers who arrived on the scene showed the man’s blood alcohol content was 0.210%, or more than two and a half times the legal limit in Florida.
The Villages woman was charged with driving under the influence after a separate crash on the golf cart path near Buena Vista Boulevard and Stillwater Trail. Cops caught up with her at UF Health Spanish Plaines Hospital, where she was being treated for a laceration. The woman submitted to breath tests, which showed her BAC was as high as 0.126%.
