A Villager recently suffered a traumatic brain injury in a golf cart crash on Morse Boulevard, just the latest accident on the busy stretch of road.
Details remain unclear, but the golf cart appears to have collided with a sport utility vehicle on Morse Boulevard at Martinez Drive. Photos of the scene show a golf cart with significant damage to the front of the vehicle, and it is turned over on its side.
The accident comes months after a bizarre incident in which a woman was struck by a golf cart on Morse Boulevard at San Juan Drive near the entrance to the Village of Hacienda. The man she had been walking with was charged with battery after allegedly punching the golf cart driver.
At least 42 golf cart crashes have been reported on Morse Boulevard in the last five years, according to Villages News.
Last year, a man driving a golf cart broke his ankle after a run-in with a Nissan Pathfinder SUV, for instance. The golf cart reportedly flipped over onto the driver’s side of the vehicle after he swerved to avoid the SUV.
In late 2024, a 92-year-old Villager was seriously injured in a golf cart accident while approaching the intersection of Guido Avenue. The man was trying to make a left turn and failed to yield to oncoming traffic before the cart collided with a car.
Local residents have long complained that Sumter County officials are not taking the situation seriously.
The Villages’ Amenity Authority Committee recently shot down a proposal to spend more than $2 million on safety improvements. The committee instead said it would urge the county to reduce the speed limit to 25 miles per hour and install stop signs or additional traffic signals, according to Villages-News.
Legal Rights for People Injured in Golf Cart Accidents
Anyone who has been injured in a golf cart collision has the right to seek compensation from the driver, as well as his or her insurer and others responsible for the collision.
The money damages available in these cases generally include compensation for doctors’ bills and property damage, along with missed wages and any long-term impact on earning capacity. Additional punitive damages, which are meant to punish those responsible for the crash, may also be awarded in cases involving particularly reckless behavior.
In the tragic case that a person dies in a golf cart or other vehicle, his or her loved ones have the right to seek similar compensation for wrongful death.
