A series of separate rollover accidents that recently caused serious injuries highlights the importance of buckling up on the road.
A 19-year-old driver was seriously injured in a single-car crash on State Road 44, west of County Road 475. He lost control of the vehicle while trying to negotiate a curve, according to a police report. The man, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the car as it overturned multiple times, cops said.
The crash came weeks after Villagers suffered similar injuries in other collisions. One driver overturned a Kia sport utility vehicle on County Road 466 and Belvedere Boulevard, Villages-News reports.
Weeks earlier, a three-vehicle collision near the entrance to Lake Deaton Plaza sent two people to the hospital with serious injuries. One of the cars, a Lincoln SUV, was making a left turn into the shopping plaza when it collided with an oncoming vehicle, Villages-News reports. A third vehicle was pushed into a nearby median, where it reportedly rolled over.
The Lincoln driver, who escaped injury, was ticketed for failure to yield.
Rollover Risks are Real
Rollover traffic accidents are among the most dangerous types of crashes, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities.
Unlike typical collisions, where the force is distributed horizontally, a rollover involves a vehicle tipping onto its side or roof, subjecting occupants to violent rotational forces. That increases the likelihood that drivers and passengers are ejected from vehicles, especially when they are not wearing seat belts.
Seatbelts save some 15,000 lives across the country every single year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These vital safety devices reduce the risk of fatal injuries by up to 60%.
Injured in an Accident? Know Your Rights
Anyone who is injured in a car accident in Florida has the right to seek compensation from those responsible for the crash.
The money damages available in these cases is designed to put the injured person back in the financial position that he or she was in before the collision. Compensation for current and future medical expenses, missed wages while recuperating, and long-term impact on the person’s ability to make a living are all on the table.
Certain family members of a person who is killed in a car crash can also ensure that those responsible are made accountable for their actions by suing for wrongful death.
