Three Sumter County residents recently were killed in a trio of similar car accidents less than two weeks apart.
A 30-year-old Bushnell woman died in a rollover crash on State Route 50 in Lake County. About 11 days later, a 17-year-old Dade City driver died after rolling over his sport utility vehicle on Center Grade Road in Sumter County. In between that time, a 40-year-old Dade City man died when he flipped his SUV on State Road 44.
The Bushnell woman lost control of her sport utility vehicle while negotiating a curve, according to Villages-News. The woman, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time, was ejected from the SUV after it went off the road and rolled over several times.
The Dade City driver lost control of his SUV while “traveling at a high rate of speed,” Villages-News reports. The driver and an 18-year-old passenger were ejected from the vehicle as it overturned. Two children under the age of three who were in the rear passenger seats reportedly sustained injuries that were not life threatening.
It is not clear whether the people injured in the second crash were wearing seatbelts at the time.
The other Dade City driver also was ejected from his SUV after losing control of the vehicle. It is not clear if he was wearing a seatbelt.
Rollover accidents are some of the most deadly types of crashes because of the risk of the vehicles’ roofs collapsing and occupants being ejected. When cars roll over multiple times, that means multiple collisions that can cause serious and life-threatening injuries.
SUVs are more prone to rollover accidents than other vehicles because they are taller, narrower and have a high center of gravity. This makes them less stable, especially when negotiating curves or traveling at high speeds.
