A Villages man who fled after crashing his golf cart in Silver Lake will lose his license for six months.
The 55-year-old, who lives on the Historic Side of The Villages, recently pleaded no contest to a driving under the influence charge, according to Villages-News. The charge stems from a 2024 accident on Tarrson Boulevard in the Village of Silver Lake.
Cops found the man at home following the crash, reporting that he was “bleeding from his mouth, legs and arms.” He told them that the brakes on the vehicle had failed and that he had been taking prescribed Hydrocodone after having a tooth extraction.
Police said the man “was slurring his words and unsteady on his feet.” He was sent to a local hospital and treated with Narcan after emergency room staff determined he “had ingested numerous drugs.”
These kinds of incidents are all too common in The Villages, where golf carts are a popular mode of travel and people continue to get behind the wheel while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs.
In May, a 74-year-old Village of Caroline man lost his license for half a year following a golf cart crash at Lake Sumter. The man had bloodshot eyes and was slurring his speech, cops arriving on the scene said. He provided breath samples that showed his blood alcohol content was as high as 0.105%, above the legal limit.
A little more than a month later, a 66-year-old Village of Hemingway man had his license yanked over a similar crash. The man, who reportedly admitted to police he had been drinking, crashed his golf cart into a tree at Morse Boulevard and Bonita Boulevard.
Legal Rights for People Injured in Villages Golf Cart Accidents
Anyone who is injured in a golf cart crash in The Villages or across Florida has the right to seek compensation from those responsible. That includes negligent drivers and their insurers.
Golf cart drivers are required by law to operate their vehicles in a reasonably safe manner. That includes refraining from dangerous activity, like driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. A driver who does not live up to this responsibility is likely to be liable for any injuries he or she causes as a result.
In the tragic case that a person dies in an accident, his or her loved ones can seek similar compensation through a wrongful death claim. While no amount of money can ever replace a loved one, compensation can help ease some of the financial training that often comes with losing a loved one.
