Sumter County Crash Leaves Motorcycle Rider Dead

A 40-year-old Sumter County man was recently killed in a motorcycle accident after trying to pass a pickup truck on County Road 470.

The man was riding a Yamaha bike behind a Ford F-150 pickup when he moved into a designated passing zone to get by the truck, according to news reports. The pickup driver then made a left turn at an intersection, colliding with the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist died after being transported to a local hospital. It was not immediately clear if the pickup truck driver was injured.

The biker was one of three people killed in separate motorcycle accidents across the state the same day, Florida Highway Patrol said.

A woman standing in the travel lane of SR 429 was fatally struck by a motorcycle in the early hours of the day. A biker in Orange County was later killed when a pickup truck struck his motorcycle’s rear tire.

The tragedies underscore the real risks that even the most experienced riders face when they hit the road. They came weeks after a Villager was critically injured when his motorcycle veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a car in Lady Lake.

Approximately 400 people are killed in motorcycle crashes across the state each year, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Bikers are particularly at risk when crashes occur because they have little physical protection between them and other vehicles, and they are prone to being ejected from their motorcycles. Even when they survive these collisions, motorcyclists can incur serious and life-changing injuries.

A 42-year-old Coleman man was seriously injured in July when his Ducati motorcycle slammed head-on into a stopped construction truck in Sumter County. The crash reportedly happened when the bike crossed a U.S. 301 center line while trying to negotiate a curve.

Anyone who is injured in a motorcycle accident has the right to seek compensation from those responsible for the collision. That includes money for medical bills, property damage, missed wages, and other financial consequences.

In the tragic event that a person dies in a motorcycle accident, his or her family members can seek similar compensation from those responsible by suing for wrongful death. Compensation can never replace a loved one, but pursuing a claim can help ease the financial burden that often comes with these situations.
